Medical glossary
HbA1c
A three-month average of blood glucose, expressed as a percentage.
Definition
Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measures the percentage of haemoglobin with glucose attached. Because red blood cells live about 90 days, HbA1c reflects average blood sugar over that window — more stable than a single finger-prick reading.
Clinical context
Used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. Under 5.7% is normal; 5.7-6.4% is pre-diabetes; 6.5% or higher on two occasions confirms diabetes.
